If you’re applying for probate after the loss of a loved one, it’s important to be aware of some significant changes to government fees coming into effect this summer.

From 13 July 2026 (subject to parliamentary approval), the fee charged by the government for a probate application will increase from £300 to £526. This represents a substantial rise of more than 75% since the last increase in 2024 and is likely to affect many families who are already dealing with the emotional and financial pressures of administering an estate.

Why Are Probate Fees Increasing?

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has said the increase is intended to cover the cost of running and improving the probate service. According to the government, the higher fee reflects:

  • Rising inflation.
  • Continued investment in modernising the probate system.
  • The ongoing cost of delivering a more efficient service.

The increase forms part of wider changes to court and tribunal fees, with around 170 fees rising in line with inflation. However, the probate application fee has received one of the largest increases.

Some Good News About Probate Copies

There is one positive change that will benefit many applicants.

Last year, the cost of ordering additional copies of a Grant of Probate, Will or Letters of Administration increased dramatically from £1.50 to £16 per copy, which understandably caused frustration for families and professionals alike.

From 13 July 2026, if you request copies at the same time as submitting your probate application, the cost will be just £2 per copy instead of £16.
The Ministry of Justice says this lower fee more accurately reflects the actual cost of providing the copies and should make obtaining essential documents more affordable.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re likely to need probate in the coming months, the timing of your application could make a significant difference to the costs involved.

The government application fee is separate from any professional fees you may pay for help with administering an estate, so it’s important to factor the increased court fee into your overall budget.
